Ball, who created and executive produces HBO's vampire drama, will not continue as the series' showrunner if the show goes on to another season, the network confirmed to TheWrap on Monday.
According to HBO, the decision came about last summer, when Ball extended his overall deal with the network.
"When we extended our overall deal with Alan Ball in July 2011, we always intended that if we proceeded to 'True Blood's' sixth season that Alan would take a supervisory role on the series and not be the day-to-day showrunner," a statement from the network reads. "If we proceed to season six, the show will remain in the very capable hands of the talented team of writers and producers who have been with the show for a number of years."
Characterizing the arrangement as " the best possible world for both HBO and Alan Ball," the network added that Ball will "remain available as executive producer to consult and advise on" the series, and "will be free to develop shows for both HBO and (its sibling network) Cinemax." (Ball is executive producing "Banshee," Cinemax's first in-house series, which is slated to begin production this spring.)
"'True Blood' has been, and will continue to be, a highlight of not only my career but my life," Ball said of his sexy, blood-sucking creation. "Because of the fantastic cast, writers, producers and crew, with whom I have been lucky enough to work these past five years, I know I could step back and the show will continue to thrive as I look forward to new and exciting ventures."

"Desperate Housewives" lawsuit goes to court
Nicollette Sheridan's $20 million wrongful termination suit goes to court today in Los Angeles. Sheridan says she was fired her after she complained about creator Marc Cherry hitting her during a 2008 argument. Her character, Edie Britt, was killed off.
In her lawsuit, Sheridan said Cherry "forcefully hit her with his hand across her face and head" over a script disagreement during rehearsal.
She responded, "You just hit me in the head. That is not OK. THAT IS NOT OK," according to the lawsuit.
Sheridan could again face off with Cherry -- as well as her former castmates -- during trial testimony. NBC's "Today" reported Monday that "Housewives" stars Eva Longoria, Teri Hatcher, Marcia Cross and Felicity Huffman, all of whom have defended Cherry in the past, are all on the list of prospective witnesses.
In a panel discussion last month about the show's upcoming finale, Cherry said he hoped to pay homage to characters who were no longer with the show. He declined to say if Sheridan's Britt would be among them.
Besides Cherry, Sheridan is also suing him as well as ABC and Touchstone Television, which produces the show.

Billy Crystal, Jolie's leg boost Oscar audience
Some 39.3 million Americans watched the Oscars ceremony on television on Sunday, up from the 37.6 million audience in 2011, according to preliminary ratings data.
Broadcaster ABC said it was the second largest TV audience for the Academy Awards since 2007.
The bigger audience came and stayed tuned-in despite criticism that host Billy Crystal, 63, put on an old-fashioned show, and that the big awards went to "The Artist", a film that few people have seen.
The Academy Awards also retained all of its 2011 audience in the 18-49 year-old age group prized by advertisers, and drew more women in that viewer category than last year.
The annual Oscars ceremony show is traditionally one of the most watched events on U.S. television but audiences have fallen away in the past few years, especially when blockbuster films like "Avatar" are not in the running for the biggest honors in the movie industry.
"The Artist", which has made only about $30 million at the North American box office, was the big winner on Sunday with five Oscars including best picture, best director and best actor for Frenchman Jean Dujardin.
Crystal, making his 9th appearance as Oscar host, got mixed reviews. Alessandra Stanley at the New York Times said "the whole night looked like an AARP pep rally," while Tim Goodman at the Hollywood Reporter called Crystal's efforts a "safe unfunny retro-disaster."
But the news was not all bad for Crystal. Entertainment Weekly's Ken Tucker said it was a "jolly good show," and the New York Daily News said that Crystal "recaptured smartly the formula that worked for him in the past: quick-hit opening monologue, a song-and-dance number, then a sprinkling of jokes that had an edge but never drew blood."
Despite the jibes from critics about being old-fashioned, the Internet was abuzz with Oscar talk as millions of people watched and chatted online before and after the telecast. ABC said four million people visited website Oscar.com or used an Oscar smartphone app on Sunday alone.
Social media tracker Trendrr said social activity during the show - ranging from online buzz to Twitter comments and Facebook 'likes' - doubled from 2011 to 4.2 million hits on Sunday. Red Carpet coverage brought 3.9 million hits.
Meryl Streep, who was a surprise best actress winner over presumed front-runner Viola Davis, attracted the most mentions on social media, Trendrr said. The most-mentioned actor was "The Artist" star Jean Dujardin.
Angelina Jolie set the online world alight when she thrust her leg out of her thigh-high slit dress while presenting an award. Within minutes, a Twitter account had been set up with the handle "angiesrightleg," and by Monday it had some 17,000 followers.
Sunday's Academy Awards TV audience was on a par with February's Grammy Awards show, which was watched by a bumper 39.9 million Americans and fueled by the sudden death of singer Whitney Houston.

James Spader quits "The Office"
The former "Boston Legal" star is leaving the NBC sitcom after he completes the current eighth season of the series, which was his first with the show, the network confirms to TheWrap.
Spader played new Dunder Mifflin/Sabre CEO Robert California. He replaced outgoing manager Michael Scott, played by Steve Carell, after appearing at the end of the series' seventh season. He then quickly earned a promotion to CEO.
According to "The Office" executive producer Paul Lieberstein, the departure is in keeping with Spader's plans for the show.
"James always wanted this to be a one-year arc, and he now leaves us having created one of the most enigmatic and dynamic characters in television," Lieberstein said. "He's been a great friend to me and the show, helping us successfully transition into the post-Michael Scott years, and I'm grateful for that."
Lieberstein's statement notwithstanding, the current season of "The Office" has been marked by dwindling ratings, with the show hitting a series low of a 2.2 rating/6 share in the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic with its February 17 episode. (The show's ratings improved slightly for its most recent episode Thursday, climbing 13 percent in the demo.)
The network does not yet have specific plans for Spader's replacement.
The "Office" turnover was first reported by Variety.

Can't decide what to watch on TV? A new app may help
Peel, an app for iOS and Android, aims to solve the problem by providing personalized recommendations based on the television shows that users already like. The app is similar to how Pandora recommends music, or how Netflix suggests films.
"It stemmed from recognizing the complexity that the average user is faced with when selecting the right TV program," said Scott Ellis, the vice president of marketing for Peel.
"We wanted to move away from the channel grid that has become so pervasive and think about content at the core of the experience."
Released last year as a personalized TV guide, the app was relaunched last month to incorporate a social platform for sharing and discovering television shows with friends.
According to Ellis, the impetus for incorporating a social platform was to replicate the "water cooler" type of conversations that tend to be the way most people discover new content.
"It's about how to use an intelligent app to find the right show to watch based on the shows I like today and based on shows my friends are watching," he said.
Through the app users can share their favorite shows with friends, as well as their "guilty pleasures", which Ellis said usually consist of reality shows. Friends' favorite shows are also accounted for in the algorithm that makes content recommendations.
The app also pairs up with the Peel Smart Remote for consumers who want to control their television sets without using their remote controls. The pear-shaped piece of hardware takes commands from the app and then uses infrared to control the television, settop box, or virtually any other device in a user's living room.
"You can go from discovering, to selecting and then watching," Ellis said, adding that the device solves another modern day problem -- having too many remotes.
Ellis said that once more devices incorporate infrared, it will be possible to control the television without requiring another piece of hardware.
The company has partnered with Samsung, which has pre-installed Peel on select devices that have infrared. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 Plus, launched in October, was the first device to incorporate what they call the Peel Smart Remote app.
"Within a single element experience, users can discover shows and control the television set without purchasing a separate piece of hardware," he said.
Ellis said that the next steps for the app are to integrate a more interactive second-screen experience for television shows. The company plans to focus on the social aspect of the app going forward, and to announce a partnership with a major television show in the coming weeks.
Peel is a free app available in the United States.

Clooney, Pitt, Dujardin: It's an Oscar charm offensive
Clooney, 50, beloved by his peers and regarded as the most eligible bachelor in the world, is thought to have the edge for his performance as a back-up dad forced to pull his family together in the emotional drama "The Descendants".
But don't count out Dujardin, the French star of silent movie "The Artist", who has happily been spoofing himself and his Hollywood newcomer status on U.S. sketch show "Saturday Night Live" and comedy video website Funny or Die.
"Clooney is in top form and this film, most people felt was the performance of his career," said Tom O'Neil of awards site TheEnvelope.com, noting that Clooney had been campaigning hard in the run-up to the February 26 Academy Awards ceremony.
Clooney won the Golden Globe last month, and has an Oscar under his belt for his supporting role in the 2005 film "Syriana".
But that could work against him. "It's still fresh in people's minds and he's relatively young and still has a career ahead of him. People remember that, and they rarely give Oscars in quick succession," said Stephen Galloway, executive editor of features at industry publication The Hollywood Reporter.
Dujardin, 39, has the opposite problem. A household name in France but unknown in Hollywood, Dujardin utters just two words as silent movie icon George Valentin, who refuses to embrace the talkies in "The Artist."
Nevertheless, he has won a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild award for the role and has been the face of "The Artist"s Oscar campaign. If he wins on Sunday, Dujardin would be the first French-born actor to win the Oscar for a lead role.
"This is one of those rare situations where the performance is as good as movie, or maybe even carried the movie, but we don't know if that's just the way Jean is and this is the one performance he can give," said Galloway.
ONE HIT WONDER?
Dujardin rose to fame in France as a comic actor, starring in the television series "A Guy and a Girl," and the 2005 spoof surfer movie, "Brice de Nice" in which he played a dead-beat surfer obsessed with the late Patrick Swayze's character Bodhi in "Point Break."
But some industry-watchers feel he may be too green for the best actor award, and the memory of Italian actor Roberto Benigni, who charmed Americans in 1999 for "Life is Beautiful" and promptly went back to work in Italy, is still fresh.
"Jean Dujardin is part of the crazy moment that 'The Artist' has, but is he the Roberto Benigni type? He has his one big year and is honored for it, but that's the last we hear from him?" said Yahoo! Movies executive producer Sean Phillips.
British actor Gary Oldman, star of thriller "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy", and Mexico's Demian Bichir, recognized for playing a Los Angeles gardener in an immigration battle in "A Better Life", are regarded as having only outside chances of taking the Oscar home.
And Pitt, who won over audiences with his performance as baseball manager Billy Beane in "Moneyball", may have to wait his turn.
Pitt, 48, is yet to win an Oscar and has only been nominated twice before during a prolific film career that started with him being perceived as a "bit of a rascal", according to O'Neil.
"There's a feeling there for Pitt that he's way overdue and that this movie needs some awards love," said O'Neil.
"Now he's settled down with Angelina (Jolie) and had kids...and there's a feeling that he's adored as a star that matters...an Oscar would be the perfect timing right now."
Pitt also starred in Terrence Malick's mystical "The Tree of Life", which won the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival, and is among the Academy Award best picture nominees.
But Galloway feels Pitt is still too young for the award, despite his body of work.
"He looks younger than he is, he doesn't look like a veteran, and also, he hasn't yet done a body of work that is so significant, although he is putting that together. "Moneyball" will help consolidate that," said Galloway.

On Oscar red carpet, fewer jewels make stars shine
Pick the wrong necklace, earrings or bracelet, and the star risks looking incomplete or, worse yet, becomes talked about for all the wrong reasons by fashion police watching one of the world's biggest catwalks.
And this year, contrary to what one might think about the glitzy Hollywood affair, wearing the right accessories doesn't always mean dripping in diamonds, the experts say.
"Jewelry should be minimalistic - the dress should be the 'celebrity,' so to speak," said fashion designer Allen B. Schwartz.
Sandra Bullock stunned in her gold beaded Marchesa gown with an embroidered bodice when she won best actress in 2010. She capped the look by wearing delicate diamond drop earrings and bracelet, along with a silver clutch. The accessories served to highlight her shimmering gown and radiant face without overpowering the actress, making Bullock appear polished and every inch the Hollywood movie star she is.
"We're moving towards a very minimal period of accessorization," said designer Marc Bouwer. "If people are going to wear something, it's going to be one strong piece or almost nothing at all."
Yet that one strong piece can spell disaster if paired with the wrong dress. Earlier this month at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, some fashionistas put Kristen Wiig on their worst-dressed lists not because there was anything wrong with her halter-neck Balenciaga gown, but because of the awkward Fred Leighton choker she paired with it. The chunky black rhinestone piece seemed distracting and out of place, completely overshadowing anything else Wiig wore.
MINIMAL FUSS
Francois Ortarix, head of public relations for French jeweler Swarovski International, predicts lots of chandelier earrings and cuffs on Oscar Sunday. Because fashion trends seem to be pointing to dresses with bold colors and minimal fuss in design, Ortarix said "you can wear astonishing earrings no matter if your hair is worn up or down."
Earrings, with their close proximity to the eyes, also serve to light up the face, he added. And with more focus on earrings this year, where won't be too much jewelry on the neckline.
"Its minimalist on the neck, with lots of shine on the face," he said.
Swarovski's handbags have been used this awards season by Emily Blunt, Glenn Close and French actress Berenice Bejo of "The Artist." Octavia Spencer has worn Swarovsky jewelry to multiple events this season already.
The jeweler's Hollywood connection goes as far back as "The Wizard of Oz" film when the company crystallized the famed red ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in the film. More recent, the black tutu worn by Natalie Portman in last year's hit movie "Black Swan" was studded with Swarovski crystals.
For Ortarix an Oscar high point came in 2008 when French actress Marion Cotillard won the best actress Oscar for "La Vie En Rose" and was carrying a Swarovski handbag.
"Overnight she went from being a beautiful and nice French actress to an international star," said Ortarix. And all the time, she looked the part.

Simon Cowell says learned to keep his mouth shut
That means he is not commenting on speculation that music stars such as Britney Spears, Janet Jackson and Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie might become judges when the revamped TV singing show returns to Fox television in September.
Nor is Cowell falling into his own trap again and planning on forecasting the size of the TV audience for the second season -- except to say it will be bigger than last year's 13 million average viewers, which was far below his pre-season boasts.
"I shot my big mouth off as usual," the acid-tongued Briton told reporters in conference call on Wednesday, referring to his forecast that "X Factor" would draw 20 million viewers, and topple "American Idol" as the most-watched show on U.S. TV.
It didn't come close, and last month Cowell fired judges Paula Abdul, Nicole Scherzinger and host Steve Jones in a major shake-up.
"I was coming off a massive year in the UK, where (the British version of 'X Factor') had gone over 20 million and then quickly realized I should have kept my mouth shut," he said.
"I absolutely expect the second season to do better than the first ... I learned a lot from last year. I genuinely learned a lot, and I think we have learned how we can make the show better."
Cowell said he could not comment on any of the names that have surfaced in recent weeks as possible new judges.
"There is a load of speculation, some true, some not true. We will meet a number of people over the next few weeks ... I have learned a big lesson -- keep your mouth shut," he said.
Cowell did say that he wants to have two hosts next season -- a man and a woman -- saying that running a live TV show was too much for one person to handle alone and that two hosts would be more fun.
Nationwide auditions for the second season of "X Factor" and a $5 million recording contract start in Kansas City on March 14. Auditions before the new panel of judges however are not expected to start for another two months.

Stephen Colbert returns with "confidential" message to mom
Colbert's subtle and heartfelt message seemed to confirm reports that he had cancelled last week's Wednesday and Thursday tapings because his 91-year-old mother was ailing. Comedy Central, which airs "Colbert," said only that the shows had been canceled due to "unforeseen complications."
On Monday, Colbert stayed in his fiercely patriotic character while shooting down talk that his show was pulled from the airwaves because he was running for president. He also denied Joan Rivers' claim that he was having a nose job, saying he was actually getting work done on his backside.
"Oh, and one more thing," he added. "Evidently, having 11 children makes you tough as nails. Confidential to a lovely lady," he said, and gestured in salute.
His audience applauded, recognizing that the lovely lady was Colbert's mother, Lorna. She and Colbert's father, James, had 11 children before he and two of Colbert's brothers perished in a plane accident in 1974.
The "tough as nails" comment seemed to indicate that she was feeling better -- welcome news to the Colbert Nation.

Rules, schmules! Oscar hopefuls work around new guidelines
It also served as a clever marketing opportunity for Harvey Weinstein, the movie impresario who has made a history of tweaking rules set by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to restrict Oscar campaigning.
With balloting for the Oscar only a month away, the event was aimed not so much at citizens of Tinseltown as at the nearly 5,800 Academy members who could vote for "The Artist," one of the nine films nominated this year for Best Picture.
"The Artist" is the only one among this year's contenders for the world's top movie awards that was truly filmed in Hollywood, and the plaque being presented to the makers of the black-and-white, mostly silent movie about 1920s Los Angeles was a none-too-subtle bit of lobbying to movie folk who have seen film jobs leave for Toronto, New York and elsewhere in recent years.
What's good for Hollywood is, naturally, good for the Oscars and good for show business.
"The Artist" wasn't the only Oscar hopeful using the marketing ploy of a thinly veiled civic or educational event this year. Fox Searchlight, a unit of News Corp., sponsored "A Tribute to Classic Family Dramas From Oscars Past and Present" and sent "The Descendants" star George Clooney to a question-and-answer session at the Egyptian Theater in Los Angeles.
The Fox studio event was co-sponsored by the nonprofit American Cinematheque, some of whose members are also Academy members.
Dreamworks, which produced the "The Help," a tale of Southern maids in the 1960s, sponsored a symposium on "the power of films to create social change" with the USC School of Cinematic Arts.
"It just felt organic," a Dreamworks spokesman said in describing the "Help" seminar, at which Oscar-nominated star Octavia Spencer and writer/director Tate Taylor appeared on the panel. "This was a movie that was about something, a movie that resonated with a lot of people because of what it stood for."
Fox executives declined to be interviewed for this story, and a spokeswoman for the Weinstein Co. had no comment.
Why the use of so many nontraditional and educational symposiums around Los Angeles this year? Studio executives had to get creative, because that's what they're paid for.
This year, the Academy clamped down on past Oscar campaigns that included lavish parties for members where the food and drink flowed. In September, the Academy passed new rules that prohibited receptions after screenings, a longtime Hollywood lobbying ritual, and limited to two the number of panel discussions that filmmakers can attend.
The rules also barred inviting Academy voters to attend events designed specifically to promote a nominated movie or individual. What the changes didn't prohibit was nominees like "The Help's" Spencer from attending a panel discussion at which she talked about growing up in the Southern United States and encouraged USC students to reach for their dreams.
"I'm just here to talk about how powerful a film can be to change people's minds," Spencer said after posing for pictures in the lobby of the Landmark Theater in the Westwood section of Los Angeles, where the seminar was taking place.
But it's not only prestige that Oscars bring. The box office for last year's winner, "The King's Speech," jumped 10 percent the week after the film was crowned, even though it had been in theaters nearly three months. This year, online ticket seller Fandango reported a doubling of ticket sales for "The Artist" and a 65 percent bump for "The Descendants" the day after they were nominated.
To meet that demand, the studios rolled out their films to more locations. "The Artist," for example, added nearly 800 theaters to its release schedule between the January 17 nominations and a recent peak on the February 3 weekend. Its U.S. and Canadian box office more than doubled over the same period, from around $9 million to more than $20 million. "The Descendants" also aggressively boosted its theater count, and "The Help," which was released in theaters late last summer, will look to increase DVD sales and future TV revenue from all the Oscar hype.
"You particularly see the Oscar bump for end-of-year indies, movies not fueled by star power," said Fandango editor-in-chief Chuck Walton. "Moviegoers are more selective these days, and once the competition has been narrowed, they'll take a chance on seeing a movie that's an Oscar winner."
And as studio executives know these days, it's hard to win an Oscar if you don't campaign for one.

"Colbert Report" to resume production on Monday
The network declined to comment on Sunday on social media reports that political satirist Stephen Colbert switched the show to reruns at the end of last week to care for his ailing 91-year-old mother, Lorna.
"We are not commenting on any speculation about the nature of the cancellations last week," Comedy Central spokesman Steve Albini said in an email to Reuters.
He said Colbert would be filming original episodes this week, starting with a show on Monday that features best-selling author Ann Patchett.
Colbert turned to social media to thank fans for an outpouring of support after the abrupt switch to reruns ignited online speculation.
"My family and I would like to thank everyone who has offered their thoughts and prayers. We are grateful and touched by your concern," Colbert posted on Twitter on Friday.
The break in the show came during a crucial stretch for Colbert's show, with the Republican presidential primary season in full swing. Last month, he took his political satire to South Carolina before its primary, staging a mock campaign rally and urging fans to vote for former Republican presidential hopeful Herman Cain.
The comedian also has a super PAC, or political action committee - "Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow" - that had raised more than $1 million as of late January.

Houston, Adele, Minaj bring bumper audience to Grammys
The telecast drew 39.9 million viewers -- the second-largest Grammy TV audience ever and the biggest since 1984, ratings data showed on Monday. Last year's Grammys show drew 26 million viewers.
But critical reaction was mixed. Jon Caramanica of The New York Times called the show "one of the dullest Grammy ceremonies in recent memory," and said "there was nothing forward-looking" about Adele's Grammy-sweeping album "21.
The Washington Post's Chris Richards criticized the Grammys for not using Houston's death as an opportunity to "memorialize a voice that once embodied the excellence the awards claim to celebrate," saying the show instead consisted of "disjointed collaborations."
Houston, 48, was found dead in a bathtub on Saturday in a Beverly Hills hotel. The exact cause of her death is still under investigation.
On the Grammy stage, singer and actress Jennifer Hudson paid tribute to Houston with a heartfelt rendition of "I Will Always Love You."
Dolly Parton, who wrote the ballad that became one of Houston's biggest hits, said on Monday she was "brought to tears again last night" by Hudson's performance, which quickly became one of the most-searched topics on the Internet.
"Whitney - The Greatest Hits" shot to No.2 on the iTunes album chart on Monday, while Adele's single "Rolling in the Deep" was also riding high on iTunes after she sang live for the first time after throat surgery in November, and collected six Grammy trophies.
Minaj made waves with a Catholic church-inspired performance of "Roman's Holiday" that was condemned by the Catholic League.
"Perhaps the most vulgar part was the sexual statement that showed a scantily clad female dancer stretching backwards while an altar boy knelt between her legs in prayer," Catholic League president Bill Donohue said in a statement on Monday.
The Hollywood Reporter's Tim Goodman called it an "ungodly bad performance" and British paper The Telegraph said it was the
night's "most bizarre/headscratching performance."
Minaj ignored the negative comments on Monday, saying her fan base understood her.
"It's the most comfortable I've been on stage in my entire life...I could have chosen to do a no-brainer pop song but I can't do it anymore, I have to stay true to what I'm doing," Minaj told Ryan Seacrest on Los Angeles Kiis-FM radio show.
The fusion of old and new bands drew mixed reviews, with Goodman calling the collaboration between the reunited Beach Boys, Maroon 5 and Foster the People "just sad" and "completely wrong."

MSG, "Linsanity" returns to Time Warner Cable
After a blackout that lasted a month and a half, Time Warner Cable Inc subscribers will be able to watch the New York Knicks and New York Rangers hockey games, thanks to a new agreement struck with Madison Square Garden Co, which owns the MSG Network sports channel, a spokesman for the cable company said on Friday.
The companies' broadcast carriage agreement expired on December 31 and the two sides had been unable to strike a new deal until Friday. The sides had been deadlocked, depriving New York Time Warner Cable subscribers from watching the biggest story in basketball as it was happening in their own backyard.
"At this point given the phenomenon of the situation that is Jeremy Lin, I don't think they had much choice," said Brean Murray analyst Todd Mitchell.
While Time Warner Cable declined to provide details of the new terms, Mitchell said the cable provider probably had to pay top dollar.
MSG had asked for a 53 percent increase, according to Time Warner Cable comments made earlier in February.
"I don't think Time Warner had a lot of bargaining leverage. I don't know what kind of concessions they could have wrung out of MSG," Mitchell said.
MSG is controlled by the Dolan family, which also owns the Knicks, the New York Rangers and Cablevision Systems Corp, a rival of Time Warner Cable.
As one of the few types of live programming still viewed by enough people to attract top advertising dollars, the cost of sports programming has been rising globally. Other TV shows, such as dramas and comedies, are often taped and watched later, when viewers often fast-forward through commercials.
The firm SNL Kagan previously estimated that operators pay $2.63 per month per subscriber to carry the MSG Network. This compares with $2.99 per subscriber for YES Network, which is home to the New York Yankees and New Jersey Nets and $2.55 per month for SportsNet New York, which carries New York Mets baseball games.
National sports network ESPN can cost providers as much $4.69 per subscriber per month, according to SNL Kagan Research.
New York public officials intervened to helped solve the dispute and released statements about the agreement before the two companies did on Friday.
New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said that, "our office has worked diligently with Time Warner Cable and MSG Networks over the last month to bring about a resolution to their dispute."
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a statement he applauds James Dolan, the chief executive of Madison Square Garden Co, and Glenn Britt, Time Warner Cable's CEO, for "being responsive to the needs of New Yorkers."
An MSG spokesman could not be reached for comment on Friday.
The New York Times first reported the agreement earlier on Friday.

Why Oprah's Nielsen tweet was so very, very shocking
They just can't try to directly influence the 25,000 or so Nielsen families whose viewing habits determine those ratings.
Oprah Winfrey was reminded of that rule after she took to Twitter and invited viewers -- especially any with "a Neilsen box" -- to tune into her struggling OWN network. She sent the tweet Sunday and soon deleted it, she said, at Nielsen's request. In a statement she apologized and said she "intended no harm."
Why the quick retreat? Because you can give away cars to everyone in your studio audience to get people to watch your show. You just can't ask people with Nielsen boxes to watch it.
Who made this rule? The good people at Nielsen, of course, who want to ensure that their ratings are never clouded by something as unseemly as -- shudder -- a direct appeal to viewers.
"In accordance with our policies and procedures, Nielsen is reviewing this incident with our clients and we may withhold, breakout and/or make a note in the ratings," Nielsen said in a statement. "We take any violation of our policy seriously and will work with clients to resolve the situation."
The television industry supports the rule as well. A Media Rating Council resolution opposes attempts to "exhort the public to cooperate with station audience measurement services... because of its possible biasing effect." In other words, trying to get people to watch may result in them actually watching.
There's a reasonable basis for the rule: You don't want every Nielsen family to be bribed with new cars in the driveway, for example. That might lead to a terrifying world in which dumb, lowest-common denominator shows thrive even as intelligent, challenging ones are cancelled.
It's unlikely that Winfrey's tweets caused any huge spike in OWN's ratings that Nielsen will have to explain, break out, or even refuse to record. Winfrey took to Twitter at the worst possible time, during a Grammys ceremony that turned out to be the second-most watched ever, thanks in part to its many Whitney Houston tributes. Winfrey may as well have cadged for viewers during the Super Bowl.
Nielsen's review drew stories from The New York Times, The Washington Post, and many other news outlets. Some accused Winfrey of "begging" for viewers by asking them to watch her shows, as did many on Twitter.
OWN has earned lower ratings than Discovery Health, the network it replaced last year at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars, and the Twitter incident struck a chord because it seemed emblematic of her ratings troubles.
It suggested that the Queen of Talk would stop at nothing to get Nielsen families to watch -- even asking them to watch.

Bridgit Mendler enters "Secret World of Arriety"
On Friday, the 19-year old heads to the big screen, voicing the title character of the animated Disney film "The Secret World of Arrietty," and that has given rise to the idea Mendler may be the next Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez or Demi Lovato.
But Mendler, who was born in Washington, D.C. and raised outside of San Francisco, is quick to point out that she's her own person looking to expand her career in her own way.
"I'm not just following a trend. The Disney girls are presented with so many awesome opportunities that it's something to really take advantage of," she told Reuters.
"Arrietty" is based on Mary Norton's children's book series "The Borrowers" where a family of very tiny people live undetected underneath the floorboards of a country house, "borrowing" things they need from human beings. Mendler voices the spirited "borrower" Arrietty who breaks the family rule when she befriends a human boy who moves into the country house.
"Arrietty" was originally released as a Japanese film by Studio Ghibli in 2010 and has now been re-recorded in English with Mendler in the title role. Will Arnett, Amy Poehler and Carol Burnett are also among the cast of voices.
Mendler even wrote and recorded a song for the film's soundtrack called "Summertime." And, like past and present Disney stars such as Cyrus ("Hanna Montana"), Gomez ("The Wizards of Waverly Place") and Lovato ("Sonny With a Chance"), Mendler now has a record deal with Disney's Hollywood Records. Her debut pop album is scheduled to come out this summer.
"Working with Disney has been such a great way for me to expand my horizons," Mendler told Reuters. "They really believe in their kids and putting them out there. It feels awesome to have this pedestal that I can work off of."
RISE TO DISNEY FAME
Mendler came to Disney's attention as a 14-year-old when she auditioned for a TV pilot. She didn't get the part, but Disney Channel talent executive Judy Taylor recalls her being "so poised and so smart, it was evident there was real potential."
Disney "tracked" the young actress over the years and in 2009, booked her in a guest starring role on the Jonas Brothers' series "JONAS." That was followed up with a character who appeared in nine episodes of "Wizards of Waverly Place."
When Disney was preparing a new show, "Good Luck Charlie" about a teenage girl who creates video diaries of advice for her baby sister, Mendler was brought in for an audition.
"We needed an actress who was relatable and accessible but could also talk straight to the camera and then go right back to talking to her family," said Taylor. "That's not easy to do but Bridgit made it look effortless. She just nailed it."
The series is currently in production on its third season with Mendler singing the theme song to "Charlie." Her fan base grew even wider when the teen starred in the Disney Channel original film "Lemonade Mouth," a musical drama based on the book of the same name. A sequel is now in the works.
HER OWN PERSON
Though some of her former Disney contemporaries have gone through public battles with addiction (Lovato) or have engaged in questionable behavior (Cyrus), the diplomatic Mendler has nothing but praise for those who came before her.
"I think they all have unique ideas of who they want to be in the industry, and I think that's the way it should be," she said. "For me, I would be in music regardless of whether I was a
Disney girl or not and it's something I take really seriously."
Mendler cites former Disney male star Shia LaBoeuf as a model for her foray into the future. He starred in the Disney series "Even Stevens" a decade ago and has found success in the "Transformers" and "Indiana Jones" film franchises.
"Shia LaBoeuf is a great example of somebody who was able to transition into more serious movie roles," said Mendler, who recently strayed outside the Disney realm and shot an episode the Fox TV medical drama "House."
"There's possibilities of doing more adult material without having to be racy with it. I don't feel like I need to make some sort of aggressive transition," she said.
For now, Mendler is contracted for a fourth season of "Charlie," but as she continues with the show, as well as her forthcoming album, the singer/actress is adamant about also continuing her education.
"I just applied to college, so hopefully I'll get in and can go to school in the fall," she said. "I'm thinking that a liberal arts major would be good to start with. I want to use college as an experience to learn more about the world outside of the field that I'm already in."

TV network aims for new viewing audience: dogs
DogTV, a cable network for dogs, launched in San Diego this past Monday aimed at stay-at-home canines and their workaday owners who want to feel better about time apart. Free at launch, people will eventually pay $4.99 a month for the channel, but that may seem a small for sum for fido's peace of mind.
"We find it helps with separation anxiety, a problem for many dogs, and with keeping dogs relaxed and entertained," said Lisa Wilhoit McCormick, co-owner of Fido & Co. dog country club here, which is the official home of DogTV. "It does look different from human TV - the colors are different and the videos are taken from a dog's point of view."
She said the idea arose from people with stay-at-home dogs who couldn't bring them to a day care facility like Fido & Co. while the owners were at work.
Americans spent more than $45 billion on their pets in 2009, according to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association. A growing number of the 63 percent of American households with pets are spending more than $4 billion a year on grooming, boarding and doggie day care. So, why not TV?
Dog psychologists and behavior experts put about 400 hours into researching what TV-watching pooches like to see and hear and how programs should look.
DogTV's scientific advisory board includes Dr. Nicholas Dodman, a professor of veterinary medicine and behavior at Tufts University and British dog trainer Victoria Stillwell.
"Every dog has a little different taste in programming," Neumann said. "We have learned a lot and we're hoping to learn more from this launch," according to DogTV chief executive officer Gilead Neumann.
CAR CHASES OUT; SPONGEBOB IN
McCormick said many people already leave their TVs on for their dogs, but programs with car chases, sirens and gunshots can cause stress for canines.
Researchers found that dogs like "SpongeBob SquarePants" and harp music, among other things. They enjoy shows with other dogs in them including the movie "Beverly Hills Chihuahua," a perennial favorite at Fido & Co.
Other DogTV shows include a pooch-eye view from outside car windows set to somber piano music, and the sound of panting, as well as low and close-to-the-ground shots of dogs playing and chasing balls.
One thing you won't find on DogTV: advertising.
"Advertising is difficult for us - our viewers aren't able to speak out or purchase products," Neumann said. "Our content will be 100 percent for dogs, we love our subscribers but they are paying for our efforts to please our viewers."
The channel, which is being broadcast locally by Cox Communications and Time Warner Cable, was developed by a team of Israeli TV entrepreneurs. After the initial launch, customers will pay $4.99 per month for the service. Cox Cable spokeswoman Ceanne Guerra said it's too early to tell how many viewers the show has had, but she does know that a few were her own dogs.
"I did turn it on this morning," Guerra said. "It showed two dogs rough-housing and playing and another one sleeping when I was leaving for work."
At Fido & Co., where a day of play costs about $34, DogTV plays on big screen TVs for the guests, McCormick said.
It helps to put the television near the floor, she noted.

"Glee" pays tribute to Whitney Houston
In Whitney Houston's hometown, her family plans a private church service, with no public memorial set. In Los Angeles, where she died, there's not even a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for fans to pile flowers. So for the legion of music lovers mourning a global superstar, where do broken hearts go?

China issues new rules to limit foreign TV shows
Foreign television series must be capped at a total of 50 episodes and the running time for an imported series must not exceed 25 percent of the total time a given channel dedicates to broadcasting such shows, the official China Daily reported.
Most foreign television series shown on Chinese channels are from Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand and India.
U.S.-made shows are highly popular, but mostly watched online or via pirated DVDs which are widely and cheaply available on the streets.
According to the announcement by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, Chinese stations are prohibited from airing foreign series between 7 pm and 10 pm, and must not "intensively" broadcast shows from just one country.
Chinese networks are forbidden too from airing unapproved shows produced by companies outside of China and foreign series that contain violent or vulgar material, the rules state.
"Regulatory bodies around the country must increase their supervision over foreign television shows broadcast on television stations at all levels, and increase fines levied for those who break the rules," it said.
The China Daily said the regulations were "to protect domestic cultural products and ... help create a favorable environment for TV shows made by companies on the Chinese mainland."
China periodically tries reining in its state-run television channels, which increasingly have to rely on attracting advertisers and therefore viewers as government subsidies are reduced.
In 2002, Beijing pulled the plug on the Taiwan-made soap opera "Meteor Garden," fearing that the decadent lifestyle portrayed by boy band "F4" would corrupt young Chinese minds. China described the series as "electronic heroin."

"The Voice" carries for another NBC Monday night win
LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - NBC's "The Voice" powered the network to a Monday night win for the second straight week over a slate of CBS sitcoms that routinely dominated the night in the fall, according to preliminary numbers.
"The Voice" slipped from last week, as did its follow-up, "Smash." But every CBS show hit a season low. It was another big win for fourth-place NBC on a night when most-watched network CBS once looked bulletproof.
"The Voice," airing from 8-10 p.m., had a 5.9/15 rating in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic, down 12 percent from last week. At 10, "Smash" had a 2.8/7, down 26 percent from its premiere last week. Despite the significant slip, "Smash" won its timeslot -- beating CBS's "Hawaii 5-0." In its first two weeks it has earned NBC's two highest in-season ratings since April 2009, not including the Olympics.
"The Voice" beat CBS's slate of comedies by a 64 percent margin. It is currently the highest-rated show of the season on any network -- ahead of typical No. 1 "American Idol" -- but that is because of a huge boost from its season two premiere episode, which aired in the plum spot after the Super Bowl.
Overall, NBC averaged a 4.9/12 in the demo and 13.4 million total viewers. CBS, second in ratings and viewers, averaged a 3.3/8 and 10.3 million.
CBS' "How I Met Your Mother" at 8 slipped 15 percent from last week to a 3.4/10, with 9.1 million total viewers. "2 Broke Girls" at 8:30 slid 14 percent from last week for a 3.7/10 and 10.5 million total viewers. "Two and a Half Men" at 9 ticked down 12 percent for a 3.8/9 and 12.3 million total viewers. "Mike & Molly" at 9:30 drew a 3.3/8 and 11 million total viewers, while "Hawaii 5-0" closed the night at 10 with a 2.6/7 and 9.5 million total viewers.
ABC was third in ratings and viewers with a 2.3/6 in the demographic and 8.3 million. "The Bachelor" at 8 drew a 2.5/6 and 8 million total viewers, followed by "Castle" at 10, which received a 2.0/5 and 8.9 million total viewers.
Fox came in fourth for the night with an average 2.1/5 and 6.7 million total viewers. "House" at 8 received a 2.4/6 and 7.2 million total viewers, while "Alcatraz" at 9 dropped 17 percent for a 1.9/4 and 6.2 million total viewers.
